Southampton Anime and Manga Society Welcomes You

Welcome one and all to Southampton Anime and Manga Society! If you’re seeing this, you probably expressed interest in joining our society at the Bunfight. Thanks for visiting our stall; as a society we had our best Bunfight ever in terms of signups. Our first meeting takes place this Saturday at 2 p.m. in room 3001 of building 46 (Physics); the location is as marked on here. We’ll begin with four first episodes of shows that we think will give you a good idea of the kind of shows we watch: Little Witch Academia, Ano Hana, Baccano! and Mawaru Penguindrum. At 4:30 p.m. we’ll watch Wolf Children, the latest film from Mamoru Hosoda. Everyone is welcome to join us in the Stag’s Head afterwards for a drink or two.

Our first weekly meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday 2nd October. We’re in the same building as the taster showing, but we’re in room 2005. The format of our showings is as follows: we begin with the main showing, then split into the light and dark showings (dark stays in 2005, light goes next door to 2003). Main has broad appeal, light is more comedy/romance-oriented and dark is for more serious and dramatic shows. For the first week we watch the first episodes of four shortlisted anime in each showing, then everyone votes on what two shows we continue with. The shortlists are as follows (links point to MyAnimeList):

Main Light: Dark:

And that’s just about all you need to know about our first meetings. We also have our first social on Saturday of next week. It’s our annual pub crawl – details are on the Facebook event – but we’ll remind you about that over the coming days. We hope to see you at our showings!

-Michael, President

AnimeSoc Picnic and Post Exam showings

Hello everyone ^_^

As you all know we are planning on having a picnic and two post exam showings to celebrate the end of exams and finish off the year with a good dose of food and anime.

The picnic is planned for tomorrow, the 3rd of June, at 1 pm. The plan is to meet by the Cowherds just off of The Avenue and then head over to a spot on the Common. Please feel free to bring barbecue related stuff, snacks and refreshments.

For the post exam showings we will have a Dark showing and a Light showing on the 8th of June at the Physics building in the usual rooms. The Dark showing will be watching the Black Lagoon OVAs and the Light showing will be watching the second season (episodes 13-24) of Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo. The plan is to start the showings at 1 pm. The light showing will be finishing later than the dark one and so Michael has booked the room until 7 pm for us. Please feel free to bring some snacks with you as we plan to have some breaks.

We also have the events up on on facebook. The link for the picnic is and the link for the post exam showings is

May 15th Showing + Post-Exam Plans

Hi guys, on Wednesday we have our final weekly showing of the year! Our preview showing is something a little special: the classic Garzey’s Wing and the unforgettable Mars of Destruction. After that we have the main showing: episodes 11 and 12 of The World God Only Knows season 2 and episodes 10 and 11 of Eden of the East. These are the final TV episodes for both shows (though TWGOK has some OVAs and a third season airing in the summer, and Eden of the East has two sequel movies). We then split for our dark and light showings. In dark we will be watching the twelfth and final episodes of Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage and Ga-Rei: Zero. In light we have episode 12 of Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and the final two episodes (12 and 13) of Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun.

While this is our final weekly showing, we do still have a couple of events planned. Since most people are finished with exams by the end of the second week of the exam period, we’ll have our annual post-exams picnic celebration on the afternoon of Monday 3rd June. The plan is to bring some instant barbecues and plenty of stuff to cook down to Southampton Common and enjoying ourselves. We ask that anyone who comes along brings something, whether it’s burgers or buns or drink or whatever. If the weather is bad we’ll reschedule for some time later in the week.

On the following Saturday (8th June) at 1 PM we’ll have our final showing of the year. The dark showing has been planning to watch the Black Lagoon OVAs at the end of the year for a while now, but that excludes the people from the light showing. At the same time we’ll also have a light showing – what exactly will be shown is to be decided on Wednesday.

May 8th Showing

Hi guys, tomorrow we have our usual weekly showing. For the preview showing we have two more shows from the current season of anime: Yuyushiki and Devil Survivor 2 The Animation. Those are followed by the main showing: episodes 9 and 10 of The World God Only Knows season two and episode 8 and 9 of Eden of the East. We then split for episode eleven of our dark (Ga-Rei: Zero and Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage) and light (Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun) shows. Hope to see you there.

May 1st Showing

Hi guys, we have our usual weekly showing today. For our previews we have two critically acclaimed shows from the current season of anime airing in Japan: Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyoujin) and Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (Suisei no Gargantia). We’ll then have three episodes of The World God Only Knows season two (episodes six thru eight) and two of Eden of the East (episodes six and seven). We then split for episode ten of our dark (Ga-Rei: Zero and Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage) and light (Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun) shows. Hope to see you there.

April 24th Showing + New Committee

Hi guys, we have our usual showing tomorrow starting at 6:30. For our previews we have two single-episode OVAs from this year’s Anime Mirai project: Death Billiards and Little Witch Academia. Following these we have the main showing of The World God Only Knows season two (three episodes, 3 thru 5) and Eden of the East (episodes 4 and 5). We then split for episode 9 of our dark (Ga-Rei: Zero and Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage) and light (Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun) shows. Hope to see you there.

For those that missed the AGM last week, we have chosen our committee for the next year. I was voted in for a second year as president, for which I thank you all. Our new vice-president is Simon Wyatt; he replaces Eleonore Mason, who is our new PR officer. She in turn replaced Helena Glover, who is now social secretary. Matthew Cheeseman and Sam Bull were re-elected to the positions of treasurer and webmaster respectively, while Brett Burgess is our new legal secretary.

AnimeSoc Committee 2013/14
President: Michael King
Vice-President: Simon Wyatt
Treasurer: Matthew Cheeseman
Legal Secretary: Brett Burgess
Social Secretary: Helena Glover
Public Relations Officer: Eleonore Mason
Webmaster: Sam Bull

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank outgoing social secretary Ben Ward for his work over the past year.

London Trip

Hey everyone,
as some of you might remember there is going to be a trip to London Saturday the 20th April. We’ll be visiting places like the Japan Centre, which is a great shop or all things Japanese; Minamotokitchoan, a Japanese confectionary shop; Arigato, another excellent Japanese shop; Tokyo Toys, a shop filled with anime and manga merchandise; Forbidden Planet, the same as the one in town here, but much bigger. We will then have some dinner at either Ten Ten Tei or the East Street Restaurant, depending where we can get in, but they are both fairly cheap and good quality Asian restaurants. This will be a great day out, and good way to spend your loan. We will perhaps leave around 10-11am. I will be poking around on Wednesday, to see who is likely to be coming. I shall also hopefully have your T-shirts and Hoodies for you to pick up.

April 17th Showing + AGM

Hi guys, I hope you all had a relaxing Easter break. AnimeSoc will be starting up again next week, and the important thing about this showing is that we will be holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM). There will be some brief society business to attend to, and we then hold elections for each committee position. Every position from president to webmaster is up for election, and there is no restriction upon how many positions you can run for. Anyone can run, whether you’re a first-year or a seasoned veteran. The full list of positions is listed below, with the incumbent’s name in brackets.

  • President (Michael King)
  • Vice-President (Eleonore Mason)
  • Treasurer (Matthew Cheeseman)
  • Legal Secretary (Max Kamille)
  • Public Relations Officer (Helena Glover)
  • Social Secretary (Benjamin Ward)
  • Webmaster (Sam Bull)

The AGM will get underway at 6:30, so to accommodate it there will be no preview showing. Once the AGM is over we will have the main showing. Due to technical difficulties at our last showing we will begin with episodes 1 and 2 of The World God Only Knows’ second season. That will be followed by episodes 2 and 3 of our new show Eden of the East, as chosen at the previous showing. We then split for dark (Ga-Rei: Zero and Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage) and light (Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun), where episode 8 of the respective shows will be watched.
