So, you just got your A-Level results, and you’ve been accepted at Southampton. Congratulations! Chances are that if you’re reading this, you’re already a fan of anime and/or manga. Then Southampton Anime and Manga Society is just the place for you! We meet once a week on Wednesday evenings to watch a selection of the best that Japanese animation has to offer, and we hold events all through the year ranging from pub crawls to trips to conventions. It’s a great way to make friends, and everyone has fun. Best of all, membership is completely free! If you’re interested in joining, you can come find us at the Bunfight, Southampton’s societies fayre held during Freshers Week.
Details about our first meetings of the year will be posted nearer to the time. The best way to keep up to date is to subscribe to updates from this website via the form in the sidebar. You can also join our Facebook group or follow us on Twitter.
Hi guys, I hope you all had a relaxing Easter break. AnimeSoc will be starting up again next week, and the important thing about this showing is that we will be holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM). There will be some brief society business to attend to, and we then hold elections for each committee position. Every position from president to webmaster is up for election, and there is no restriction upon how many positions you can run for. Anyone can run, whether you’re a first-year or a seasoned veteran. The full list of positions is listed below, with the incumbent’s name in brackets.
- President (Michael King)
- Vice-President (Eleonore Mason)
- Treasurer (Matthew Cheeseman)
- Legal Secretary (Max Kamille)
- Public Relations Officer (Helena Glover)
- Social Secretary (Benjamin Ward)
- Webmaster (Sam Bull)
The AGM will get underway at 6:30, so to accommodate it there will be no preview showing. Once the AGM is over we will have the main showing. Due to technical difficulties at our last showing we will begin with episodes 1 and 2 of The World God Only Knows’ second season. That will be followed by episodes 2 and 3 of our new show Eden of the East, as chosen at the previous showing. We then split for dark (Ga-Rei: Zero and Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage) and light (Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun), where episode 8 of the respective shows will be watched.
Welcome to the University of Southampton, and welcome to Southampton Anime & Manga Society – a SUSU-affiliated group dedicated to the enjoyment and appreciation of anime and manga!
Thanks for showing interest in our group! Allow me to invite you to our taster session on Saturday 29th October. We will be watching a selection of first episodes from shows that we think you might enjoy, followed by the feature-length movie Summer Wars. The showing will get underway at approximately 4:30 PM, the film will start at 7:00 PM, and we’ll be finishing at around 9 PM. Feel free to turn up at any time that suits you. It will take place in the EEE building (building 32, opposite Highfield Interchange and the Nightingale building) in room 1015. There’ll be a few of us around to show you the way if you’re unsure of where to go once you’re inside. If you have little experience with anime – or have no idea what it is at all – we think this will be a great introduction and should hopefully get you interested. Please come along!
During term time we meet each Wednesday evening, starting at 6:30 PM, to watch a variety of series and hang out together. The showings are split into two halves: first the whole society watches the Preview and Main showings together, and we then split into the Light and Dark showings in separate rooms. The Preview showing consists of a few first episodes of anime that we aren’t watching week-to-week, usually drawn from the most recent shows to air in Japan. The Main showing is general interest – shows that most people can enjoy. The Light showing is more light-hearted, weighted towards slice of life and shoujo, whereas the Dark showing will cover more adult, seinen shows. These weekly showings will get underway on Wednesday 3rd October, where we will be voting for which shows we watch during the first semester. The shortlisting for the showings are as follows (don’t worry about watching any of them prior to coming to the showing, we’ll be watching the first episode of each before voting!):
- Mawaru Penguindrum
- The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
- Tiger & Bunny
- Acchi Kocchi
- Heartcatch Precure!
- Magic Knight Rayearth
- Princess Tutu
- Black Lagoon
- Hell Girl
Everyone present has two votes to cast, and the two shows from each category with the most votes will be the shows that the group continues to watch. I hope to see as many of you there as possible!
-Michael King, President
After the voting last week we are going to be watching the following anime for the rest of the semester:
> Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei
> Macross Frontier
> Magica Madoka
> Usagi Drop
> Haibane Renmei
In addition to that we are starting the drama from this week which will be Ouran High School, so if you want to watch the drama it starts at 6.30. The main anime showing starts at 7.30 with our preview anime which is Case Closed this week.
We will be meeting in the usual place which is 46/2005
See you all tomorrow!
