This week it’ll be Tamako Market and Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, both from the current season of anime. The previews start at 6.30, with the main shows beginning an hour later. Hope to see you there.

January 30th Showing

Tomorrow we have our first regular showing of the new semester. Just like the first time we got together in semester one, we’ll be choosing some shows to watch. For each part of the showing (main, dark and light) we’ll see the first episodes of four shows and choose two to keep watching. Below are the anime we will pick from:

Main Light Dark

Those links all point to MyAnimeList in case you want to check up on what each show is.

I hope that semester two can be just as good as semester one was. See you all in the usual place at the usual time of 6:30.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to Southampton everyone, I hope you had a fun Christmas and that your exams went well. With the exam period ending this week, AnimeSoc will resume with a special weekend showing. This Sunday, the 27th, we’ll be meeting in our usual room (46/2005) at noon to watch the six-part OVA FLCL (AKA FuriKuri, Fooly Cooly etc.) in its entirety. FLCL captivated a whole generation of American animation enthusiasts when it aired on Cartoon Network in the early 2000s, and is regularly cited as one of the best works from that era. Come along, bring your friends and blow off some exams steam for one of the most accessible and charming shows ever made.

Next week we’ll resume our regular weekly showings, with a new crop of shows to watch and vote on! As with the first showing of the year, we watch four first episodes in each part (i.e. four each for main, dark and light). Members then vote on which shows they want to continue watching, with the best two being chosen. The anime we are watching are as follows:

Main Light Dark

Those links all point to MyAnimeList so you can get a feel of the shows before we start watching.

I hope to see you all on Sunday and next week!

December 12th Showing + Saturday Showing

Wednesday is our last regular showing of the year! I know, it’s heartbreaking, but read on! This week we’ll begin at our usual time, but there will be no preview showing. In lieu of those, we’ll be watching two extra episodes of Mawaru Penguindrum, for a total of four episodes (21 thru 24). We will thus reach the end of Penguindrum. If you normally choose to turn up at 7.30 because you don’t wish to see the previews, make sure you come along at 6.30 so you don’t miss anything. After that, we will watch three episodes of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Live Alive, Melancholy V and Melancholy VI) – that will also bring us to that show’s end. Well, with regards to the TV series, at least… After that we split into Dark and Light showings. These are also slightly different this week as we endeavour to finish shows rather than leave you hanging. We will not be watching Princess Tutu or Hellsing – instead, we have two episodes of Acchi Kocchi or of Black Lagoon (11 and 12). This should be a good one.

But that isn’t quite the end of AnimeSoc for this year. On Saturday 15th December we will be watching The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, the feature length Haruhi film. We’ll be starting at around 2 o’clock, and we’ll be in our usual room (46/2005). The film takes place after the main series around Christmas time, so it’s a suitable end to the year. It’s probably one of the greatest anime movies ever made, so you’d be unwise to miss it!

December 5th Showing + CHRISTMAS MEAL

We have our penultimate weekly showing of the year on Wednesday! Our preview anime will be Arakawa Under the Bridge and The Legend of Koizumi, followed by episodes 19 and 20 of Mawaru Penguindrum and three episodes of Haruhi: The Day of Sagittarius, Sigh V and The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina. After that we have episode 10 of our Dark and Light shows: Hellsing and Black Lagoon or Acchi Kocchi and Princess Tutu.

Just a quick reminded that our annual Christmas meal takes place this Sunday at Wagamama in WestQuay! The Facebook event is here, please do RSVP to it if you intend to go, since we need to know the numbers. If you’re averse to Facebook, then let me know that you’re going in person or by emailing me through the contact form.

November 28th Showing

Hi guys, we’ve got our usual showing today. Our previews will be Infinite Ryvius and Kaleido Star, followed by the main showing – Mawaru Penguindrum episodes 17 and 18 then three episodes of Haruhi (Melancholy IV, Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody and Someday in the Rain). We’ll then split for Dark and Light: respectively Hellsing and Black Lagoon; Acchi Kocchi and Princess Tutu (episode 9 for all).

If you weren’t at last week’s showing, you won’t have heard that we’re going to be having our annual Christmas lunch on next Sunday, December 9th. We’ll be going to the new branch of Wagamama that has opened in West Quay – they have a Japanese-inspired menu, mostly based around ramen, teppanyaki and curry. The exact time is to be determined, but we will have a Facebook event set up soon.
